Phylicia Rashad Debbie Allen Well Its Funny Because Like the Weird Thing

Just about everyone knows the names of Hollywood legends Phylicia Rashad (who now stars as Beth's mother Carol on This Is Us) and Debbie Allen (who currently plays Catherine Fox on Grey's Anatomy). However many may not realized that these iconic actors and activists are actually sisters.

Born to Vivian Ayers, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated poet, and Andrew Arthur Allen Sr., a dentist who was obsessed with theater, the sisters grew up in both Houston, Texas and Mexico City along with their two brothers, Andrew Arthur Allen Jr. and Hugh Allen.

Throughout their childhood, Phylicia told Town and Country that the arts were "as much a part of life as climbing trees."

In terms of Debbie and Phylicia's relationship as sisters, the two were always supportive of one another and credited their mother for inspiring them to keep pursuing the arts, despite experiencing segregation.

Phylicia told Oprah, "My mother was determined that her children would not be scarred by this ignorance. So, when there was someplace we wanted to go and we couldn't go because of segregation, she would say, 'We won't be able to go there because it's a private club and we're not members of that club.'"

Meanwhile, Debbie said to The Los Angeles Times: "We grew up with not a lot of money. We grew up with racial segregation. We grew up not being able to go to ballet class or downtown to a restaurant or to a movie. And so my mother, Vivian Ayers, always made us believe that we were part of a universe that welcomed us and wanted our creativity and was waiting for us to do something good. And so we've been doing that forever."

The love and support of their family carried on as Debbie and Phylicia got older, studied the arts, and tried to make it into the industry.

"When she [Debbie] came to NYC from college, we took an apartment together and we'd hide money in each other's pockets," Phylicia told Closer Weekly. "But I didn't realize she was doing it, too! That way we could still maintain a feeling of independence like we forgot we put it there."

To this day, the mega-successful sisters are recognized for their vast contributions to entertainment industry. In 2018, stage veterans, singers, producers, and acting legends such as Shonda Rhimes, Gladys Knight, and Nigel Lythgoe gathered at the Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills, California to honor the two.

While Debbie and Phylicia have received honors on their own, Debbie noted that it was especially rewarding that they got to share an award together.

"It means everything because that doesn't happen — it's always one or the other," Debbie said. "We're always there for each other, but it's so nice to be here together."
